Pastoral Care is a ministry of highs and lows – ups and downs.  You meet with one person and come away rejoicing – you meet with another and come away with your heart breaking.  But this is biblical, as found in Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.”  The wonderful part of it is that, whether rejoicing or weeping, God is there just as He promised.

Recently, I stood by the hospital bed of one of God’s choice servants after he had been told by the doctors, “There is nothing more we can do for you. You just have a short time to live.”  Watching him live out his faith was such a blessing to me. He was practicing what he had been teaching for many years.  I left his room asking God to give me that kind of courage and faith when this earthly life ends for me.

Later that day, a young man and his fiancé came by my office to ask if I would perform their marriage ceremony.  Such joy came to my heart for, you see, this young man sang in my children and youth choirs years ago.  As he was about to leave my office I extended my hand to shake his, but he passed by that hand and gave me a big bear hug.

What a blessing God gave to me that day!

Today I thank God for allowing me the joy of serving as His minister.
